CNC Turning can produce parts with tight tolerances (up to ± 0.025 mm) and fine detail from a variety of metal or plastic materials.

Due to the subtractive nature of CNC, minor tool marks will be visible on the surface of the part after machining. A number of post-processing and finishing methods can be applied to improve the surface roughness, visual properties and wear resistance of the CNC turning parts.

In this article we discuss the most common metal CNC finishes to help you select the most suitable surface finish for your application.

Aluminum Material Series

As Machined

~125 RA µin (3.2 RA µm). Minor tool marks will be visible on the part.

Bead Blasted

Bead blasting adds a uniform matte or satin surface finish on a machined part, removing all tool marks.

Anodized Clear or Color

Anodizing adds a thin, hard coating on the surface of aluminum parts.

Hard Anodized

Hard anodizing produces a thicker ceramic coating on the surface

Power Coated

Powder coating adds a thin layer of strong paint on the surface of a part.

Brushing

Brushing is produced by polishing the metal with grit.

Polish

Polishing can make products achieve gloss surface roughness

Painted

Painting adds a thin layer of strong on the surface of a part.

Alodine

Alodine could prevent aluminum from oxidizing .

Stainless Steel Material Series

As Machined

~125 RA µin (3.2 RA µm). Minor tool marks will be visible on the part.

Brushing

Brushing is produced by polishing the metal with grit resulting in a unidirectional satin finish.

Polished

Polishing can make products achieve vey glossy and smooth surface roughness

Black Oxided

Black Oxided is a conversion coating for ferrouns and non-ferrous materials

Passivated

Passivation is the process of treating or coating a metal in order to reduce the chemical reactivity of its surface.

Chromate Plated

It is used for decorating purpose, chrome plating can also serve as a layer of protectin as well. It is applied to metal objects when three is an increased opportuntiy for corrosion to occur

Zinc Plating

Zinc plating, a process also known as galvanization, is the deposition of a thin layer of aluminum onto a metal component to provide a protective layer.

Nickel Plated

Nickel electroplating a technique of electroplating a thin layer of nickel onto a metal object                                                                                                                                          Electroless nickel plating, an auto-catalytic chemical technique used to deposit a layer of nickel-phosphorus or nickel-boron alloy on a solid workpiece

Chromate Plated

It is used for decorating purpose, chrome plating can also serve as a layer of protectin as well. It is applied to metal objects when three is an increased opportuntiy for corrosion to occur

Heat Treated

Heat treating can soften metal, to improve formability. It can make parts harder, to improve strength.

Black Oxided

Black Oxided is a conversion coating for ferrouns and non-ferrous materials

Phosphate

Black Oxided is a conversion coating for ferrouns and non-ferrous materials

Power Coated

Powder coating adds a thin layer of strong, wear and corrosion resistant protective polymer paint on the surface of a part. Available in a large range of colors.

Real Gold Plating

Gold plating is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, most often copper or silver (to make silver-gilt), by chemical or electrochemical plating.
