What is Zinc Plating?
Zinc Plating is a widely available solution for protecting steel parts from corrosion. It is commonly chosen because it is cost-effective, offers excellent corrosion protection and features an attractive blueish/silver appearance. Zinc plating is the process of covering substrate metals (like steel and iron, etc.) with a layer or coating of zinc to protect the substrate from corrosion. There are two types of zinc plating: Hot-dip Galvanizing and Cold Galvanizing.
Colors of Zinc Plating.
The various colors of zinc plating can be identified by the color produced by the different formulations. Each color offers different levels of corrosion protection:
Clear or White Zinc or Blue Zinc: This coating formulation tends to offer fewer amounts of corrosion protection, although it’s regarded as being more environmentally friendly.
Yellow Zinc: This type of zinc coating is commonly used in the automotive industry and offers an average level of protection against corrosion.
Black Zinc: Black zinc coatings are available as a black oxide that can actually be olive-drab in color, or as a pure black coating. The former will normally provide slightly better corrosion resistance.
Benefits for Zinc Plating?
Cost-Effective: Zinc plating is ideal for companies looking for a cost-effective metal finishing to protect their metal components. When it comes to protecting metals from the elements, Zinc is often preferred over more expensive precious metals such as Gold.
Attractive Finishing Touch: You can choose from zinc plating that comes with different types of colors. Its finish is usually a luster or a shiny finish, making it more visually appealing and coming across as high quality.
Ductility and Durability: Zinc is highly malleable, allowing it to stretch great lengths and mold into any shape. Its lightweight does not compromise the metal’s functionality. Zinc is also a perfect option for undercoats.
